Kalsta Spring Creek

Kalsta Spring Creek – On the Big Hole River

Overhanging cottonwood limbs and professionally designed structure provide numberous places for fish hide and anglers to test their skills.

Nestled along the cottonwood-lined river bottom on the secluded east side of the Big Hole River, Kalsta Spring Creek provides the opportunity to fish a true gem of private water, all the while becoming immersed in nature and the natural beauty that makes Montana such a wonderful place to fish.

Completed in 2010, Kalsta Spring Creek is the long awaited result of over 13 years of planning by the Kalsta Family. There are few tributaries on the lower 44 miles of the Big Hole that offer opportunities for thermal refuge or spawning for salmonids. Kalsta Spring Creek has provided one opportunity for such necessary habitat.

Coming from the mouth of the creek working upstream, Kalsta Spring Creek splits into two sections. One winds its way through professionally designed habitat and natural water corridors that just ooze with big fish potential, while the other heads toward the newly implemented dike put in place to store cool water and regulate flows throughout the summer months. With the dike in place the water temps in the spring creek stay cool and provide trout a refuge during the summer months.

Kalsta Spring Creek becomes a safe haven for fish looking to escape the flushing flows from the Big Hole River in early summer.

The cottonwood-lined banks, complete with other “structure” and tall grasses, provide unbelievable aquatic insect habitat and will be a magnet for terrestrials in the late summer and early fall. Salmonflies, hoppers, beetles, ants, and big attractors are at the top of our list this season as we are eagerly awaiting the arrival of summer on Kalsta Spring Creek. If you’re a dry fly enthusiast or just like to fish small creeks, catch the “uncatchable fish”, enjoy the challenge of difficult casts, chase big fish, or fish an area untouched by the general public, Kalsta Spring Creek is for you. Because Kalsta Spring Creek empties into the Big Hole River and is easily accessed by fish searching from food or structure, fish will move into its waters on a daily basis, allowing the angler to target “fresh” fish each day. This revolving inventory makes Kalsta Spring Creek a truly unique piece of private water.

In addition to the tremendous fishing potential, Kalsta Spring Creeks boast the chance at seeing a wide array of wildlife.  Moose, Deer, Elk, Turkey, Eagles, Beaver, and a wide variety of other birds and animals frequent the property.  Imagine trying to slip a size 18 Purple Haze in between two logs to a 20? wild brown trout feeding on PMD’s, while in the pond on the other side of the creek you watch a young bull moose lazily come down and partake in an afternoon drink.
