This hefty Rainbow took a size 14 red snow cone Chironomid.
If you tire of the feverish action on the Beaverhead, you can trip over to the south end of Clark Canyon Reservoir for a relaxing change of pace. We were the first boat on the lake at about 0730 on the last day of July. The channel of the Red Rock is the place to fish and it is easy to spot at the current high level of the lake. The lake is about 92% full but it is dropping in rapidly and the release into the Beaverhead exceeds the inflow from the Red Rock and Horse Prairie Creek. We fished size 12 – 14 San Juan worms, scuds, an assortment of Chironomids and Callibaetis about a foot to two feet off the bottom. Had four hook-ups and landed tree heavy, thick, rainbows of the 20 inch variety when the wind picked up and caused us to retreat to the Beaverhead. You will catch big fish every day on Clark Canyon at its present level but it takes some patience because the action is a little slow. However, we expect that fishing on the lake will improve this month as the level drops and water warms a bit.
