Over the past three days we have covered the Big Hole River from Brownes Bridge all the down to the Notch. On Friday we put two boats in at Glen Bar and floated the short stretch down the Glen. We needed to be off at a decent time as TLA had a table at the famed Dillon Rodeo Banquet, and a newly enrolled student at the University of Tennessee eager to get back and watch the Vols play Ohio St in the Sweet 16…which they won. The short stretch ended up being way more than enough water as we were into fish at the boat launch and didn’t stop releasing them the whole way down, and even got a good brown at the take out. Stonefly nymphs, SJW’s, BWO’s, Princes, and Copper Johns were the ticket on a beautiful afternoon in Southwest Montana.
Saturday saw us put on boat in at Glen and float down the the Notch. The weather and water were a little cooler this day and it was a little slow in the morning hours. Around lunch time things started to heat up as some midges and BWO’s began to hatch and the fish responded in like. The afternoon saw good numbers of fish caught and a variety of fish at that. We ended up boating Brown’s, Rainbow’s, Whitefish, a Grayling, a Cuttbow, and an FWP tagged Rainbow. Too add to the variety bag a little more, we found out that another boat in that section ended up landing a Ling as well. Flies consisted of the same package as the day before, but the money bug of the day was a size 12 green Stonefly Nymph with biots and rubber legs.
We have a week break and then will be back out again chasing trout. Spring time fishing has been nothing but great this year, and the Big Hole has given us some of the best in recent years. Skwallas should be out soon. Time for dries!
