Big Hole River Fishing Report – August 12, 2009

The past week on the Big Hole has produced some of the best dry fly fishing of the year, if not the best for consistency of takes and the duration at which they are eating.  Spruce months are out and in abundance, and the fish are eagerly looking to take them in all types of water.  The upper portion of the river from Troutfitters down to Melrose has been the most productive stretch for these moths, with Jerry Creek to Maiden Rock holding the title for best stretch in that reach.  We fished Dewey to Maiden Rock yesterday and had an absolute epic day of fishing landing 60 + fish and having at least 40 eats that didn’t produce a fish.

We are expecting to get some rain over the next few days which may turn the fishing down a notch, but with sunny skies in the days following the moths will be out again in good numbers.  What an August this has turned out to be for the Big Hole!
