Nice 20" Brown on a skwalla

Nice 20" Brown on a skwalla

Well, the first day of the official 2009 season is in the books and it was a good one!  The Big Hole was boiling with trout as a large hatch of March Browns were bringing fish to the surface for most of the day.  A size 12 purple haze, size 12 brown drake cripple, and a size 12 Royal Wulff were the flies of the day.  We even enticed a nice 20″ brown to take a Skwalla pattern.

Shortly after midday the topwater fishing slowed, but a good mix of nymphing and streamer fishing kept us in the action all afternoon.  We pulled up some decent fish on stones and PT emergers, but our best luck after 1pm came with yellow and natural colored streamers.

The water is slowly continuing to rise with the warmer temperatures, but the fishing should remain fairly consistent through the next few days.  The weather is slated to hold so expect another good day of fishing tomorrow, but we might see higher waters by the end of the week.
