Tricos in the Slick during the morning hours, and Hoppers in the lower reaches during the afternoons have defined this river over the past few weeks. Moss and alge breakup off the banks and river bottoms are still presenting problems to both dry fly anglers and nymph fisherman alike. The cooling weather has helped decreased the amount of debris, but grass and weeds still hinder anglers trying to get a good drift. Zebera midges, soft hackles, sjw’s, crane fly larvae, princes, pt’s, and an assortment of midge patterns have been taking fish sub surface. Early risers have experienced good crane fly fishing in the mornings skating these big bugs while trailing a brown bear brown, prince, or other big soft hackle. Evenings have also been a good time to fish cranes as the fish aggressively take this late summer treat.
