Beaverhead River Fishing Report

Ken and his Beaverhead River Monster Bow

Our first trip down the Upper Beaverhead for the 2010 season was interesting to say the least.  The water was chilly, bugs were lethargic, fishing was hit or miss, I got smacked in the lip with 3 pieces of #3 lead drawing blood (which was my fault), and we struggled to put many fish in the net.  The fish on the upper river are absolute toads this year.  The rainbows on the Beav are normally healthy footballs, but this year…WOW.  We landed two 21″ bows that looked as though they should have been at least 24″ due to their astounding mass.  We hooked and fought a handful of these big babies, but with a size 20 hook in their lip, not a lot can be done to entice them into the net.  The fish took a size 16 pink softy, size 16 pink ray charles, size 16, 18 green split backs, and an assortment of midge patterns.  We’ll be back again tomorrow trying to battle these hefty fish, and do our best to increase our landing efficiency.
