Another mind boggling day on the Beav.

Big Brown taken on a swinging Caddis

There is something going on in the water here in Southwest Montana, and particularly on the Beaverhead River.  With Montana’s general fishing season just two days away (Saturday, May 15th) the upper portion of this river is surely going to be hit hard by anglers from in and around our area this weekend.  But as we sit here just hours from the opening, the lower river is providing us with some of the best fishing I have seen.  All the seasoned anglers that are lucky enough to experience this unique situation agree that this is truly a memory of a lifetime.

As one of our guests put it today, “…one of the most unbelievably great days of fishing I have ever had…what a day!”

Caddis have been coming off in good numbers the last few days as our weather has been in the mid 50′s to mid 60′s with very little wind on the river.  Today was extremely pleasant and we were surrounded by Caddis, BWO’s, Drakes, and even a few small spring stones.  Fish were taking a pink soft hackle sow bug, brown leach on a dead drift, size 14 prince, size 18 brown and green Micro Mayfly, and a size 16 tan Elk Hair Caddis.

Two good friends having too much fun

In the past two weeks we have been blessed with two epic days of fishing on the Beaverhead River.  Both were equally memorable, but also had unique reasons as to why they were so fun.  It’s hard to say how often this river will give you this kind of day, but one thing is for sure – we’ll be going out again tomorrow to make memories that keep us coming back for more.
